View in Web Browser Dear Blogger, We may have already met, but we’ve pivoted Red Mare Enterprises into specializing in helping horse pros build profitable businesses by incorporating automation and online video!  And since it might have been a while since we were last in touch, I thought it would be interesting to get to know us all better.  How about if I start with my story…then you can tell me yours? The Original Red Mare I started as a young freelance dressage trainer with a background rehabbing horses and a degree in design in Augusta, GA. I rode clients’ horses as a trainer and designed hundreds of websites, logos, and marketing materials for other pros “on the side.” I felt LUCKY to be able to combine my two passions, but it came at an increasingly high cost over the years.  I was working SO hard, but it wasn’t physically or mentally sustainable.  I hit a period of extreme burnout.  I began to suffer from chronic pain, anxiety, and depression. Finally, I accepted that I needed to take a step back, focus on my wellness, and bring my natural creativity to creating a more sustainable, more profitable business model. And I did!  Since 2008, Red Mare Enterprises has been helping equestrian professionals overcome the same roadblocks: burnout, lack of work-life balance, too few hours in the day, and an income ceiling that can’t be overcome working harder and longer. “I had been hustling since the age of 14 and simply didn’t know another way of being. Once you pull yourself out of a pit of despair, it’s unbearable to know others are still down there. View in Web Browser If only Pony Club had taught me how to fill my barn with great clients that pay on time, every time! Instead I learned how to measure temperature, pulse, and respiration LIKE A BOSS.  …But looking back, I wish I had learned a little more client-training skills earlier in my horse training career. Just like good horses, good clients are MADE, not born. I remember the first time I received the entire month’s income on the first day of the month.  No late payments.  No IOUs.  No scrambling to make up for all the lessons that got CANCELED at the last minute. No waiting to pay the vet bill until I hunted down all the checks I was owed.   Game Changer! Up until then, I thought clients either paid on time, or they didn’t. All of a sudden, I understood:  I had FAILED to train them.  Just like horses, clients need to understand your expectations. When they do, EVERYONE is happier! So here are some things that I wish I had learned much earlier about how to train my clients! 1 - I set clear, written policies about my rates and how clients can pay. My clients sign my payment policies at the same time they sign my release form. 2 - My money management system includes AUTOMATED, RECURRING charges for lessons, training, and board that are debited from the client’s account or credit card on the first of every month. Easy, easy, EASY … for me AND my clients! 3 - This was a BIG ONE: I created a system for cancellations and make-ups that WORKS for me so I don’t lose money and don’t have to constantly scramble to redo my schedule!
