Social Media is a pretty amazing tool.

It seems like everyone is having all this success at shows and clinics. Their students, and their client's horses, too.

Of COURSE, you should share the good stuff! We all do! It's good for your business, right? Plus, you've totally earned the right to brag for once!

But you also know that smiling happy faces don't reveal the whole story. (Except for maybe that guy who sells out stadiums everywhere he goes. He's probably genuinely pretty happy.)

How many of the horse professionals in these pictures are barely hanging on? Worried about a sick horse, or a possible career-ending injury for another.

Worried about how much hay has gone up this year and having to raise board. Or even find another supplier.

Ditch those crappy clients for good!

Have you ever had this conversation or something similar with a friend?

​

I hate it when my phone rings. Most people text me, so when there's an actual call, my heart stops for a second, and then my brain quickly runs through what the call could mean:

IT MUST BE AN EMERGENCY!

Or, no, it's probably that my car warranty is about to end. OR…

My most frustrating client.

Ugh, YUP. It's HER.

You know the type - calls to complain about every-freaking-thing. This time, while mowing the grass behind the pastures, I had the AUDACITY to leave the grass clippings on the ground. Like I've done for years. Literally yards from the fence. Yeah.

There's no way any horse can get them. But O-KAY. I get to spend 20 minutes listening to her crank on and come up with the multitude of ways her horse could die from grass clippings completely out of reach on the other side of a fence. (I should mention that the horse pretty much never ventures to the back half of his turnout, but yeah, his demise is imminent.)

These kinds of calls come almost daily from her.

When I see her car pull in, I immediately go find something to do FAR away.

I'd love to send her packing, but she always pays on time, and I need that kind of stability right now, because some of my other super lovely, easier-to-live-with clients are chronic last-minute lesson cancellers. Or they "forget" to pay their board and I have to chase them. But at least they're pleasant, so…

Actually, when I stop and think about it, this kind of stuff happens a lot. At least a few days a week.

Great example: I have time blocked to teach and then this happens:

-No show, no text - totally forgot about it, and when I text: "oops! Sorry! Love you!" Heart emoji -No show, text 10 minutes after the appointed time to say they're sorry but….(I have no respect for your time and decided something else was more important - but we're good, right?) -Call 15 minutes before so I have no chance to rearrange my schedule. Thanks. I guess at least she called.

I could go on. Usually I'm just kind of living in a state of crankiness, but some days it makes me just, sad.

I LOVE horses. I have worked hard and made a lot of sacrifices so I could make them my life's work.

"Do WhAt YoU loVe AnD tHe MoNeY wIlL cOmE"

So when does THAT happen? Where's my money? How come I'm having a hard time getting out of bed some days?

And honestly, y’all need to take a break … or even take a breath once in a while.  It isn’t about the hustle.  It’s easy to say you’re going to take a day off, but do you follow through?  I know, it’s always something. And it can be. But you need to re-charge to provide the best service to your clients and horses too! You aren’t doing anyone any favors by working 24/7.  No one gets the best of you … not even you.  So, MAKE IT EASY! -   Put a plan in place ahead of time.  -   Make sure you have staff scheduled.   -   Spa day? BOOK the appointment!  -   Plan a day of hiking? Ask a friend you won’t want to disappoint.  * If a full day or weekend is hard for you at first, start by blocking several hours into your calendar and turn off your phone’s notifications! The kind of clients you love to be around and get you out of bed in the morning! These are also the people you can have courageous conversations with … the tough talks …  … about changes to your services or pricing … potential in their horses or time for retirement … and sometimes the really tough talks, like when it's time to let go of dreams or beloved partners. The point is, these are the people you can sit down with and have these deep conversations that have a meaningful close.  You’re probably saying, “Sounds nice! Well, sort of.  Chances are, at some point you’re going to get some PUSHBACK.  How you handle that client's pushback and frustration is key to building a better relationship for the future.  Below are a few tips for your next courageous conversation.  1.  Why the changes were necessary and how these changes will enable you to work at your highest level 2.  How these new changes benefit the client 3.  Or why the client isn’t meeting guidelines (be sure you have your written guidelines available to explain) 4.  Allow the client to voice any and all concerns and questions (you may have been thinking about this for weeks, but it’s new to them) 5.  Allow space. Pause and allow silence so they can complete their comments and feel heard. Don’t rush to reply 6.  Tell them that you’d like to take some time to think about the points they made and can you agree to discuss this further at a later date 7.  Be authentic 8.  Don’t overpromise 9.  Stand your ground, but be respectful and fair   Practice these tips. Well, I know you know what a RED FLAG client is, right?  That person who doesn’t respect your boundaries - calling or texting at all hours of the day … or night …  … the person who makes you sorry you got out of bed that morning,  … the person who asks for your advice, but only wants you to agree with their pre-made decision, and promptly makes excuses why your advice won’t work? We’ve all had clients like this. They drain your energy and make you sorry you took them on.  But, what about those clients who lift you up, inspire you, and continually make you feel supported? Those clients are your Green Flags! What should you look for to fill your client roster with green flags?  Their presence is calming They respect your opinion  They listen without judgment They are supportive They make you laugh They respect your needs I'm not saying that they agree with you 100% of the time, but when they don’t, you can have a civil, adult conversation.   The kind of client relationship that is built on trust and mutual respect.  HOW do you attract or create green flag clients?  1.  Know EXACTLY who you want to attract 2.  Be BRAVE and say NO to those who make your life miserable (be honest, don't you know who they are the moment you meet them?
